What is Christian Counseling?

There are three types of Christian counseling available to those who seek it:

  • Pastoral counseling – Given by a leader of the church who typically has theological credentials and deep Biblical knowledge to go along with it. They may also have a mental health counseling background or license as well.
  • Biblical counseling – Brings Biblical insights to bear in counseling sessions exclusively, for a Bible-based perspective on issues faced by clients. Biblical counselors typically do not have mental health credentials.
  • Christian counselors – Mental health professionals with counseling education and credentials who are also Christian. For their Christian clients, they may incorporate their faith into sessions and talk about how Christian principles apply to their client’s situations and lives. They may see other clients who are not Christian as well.

iMind offers Christian counselors near you in the St. Lucie West area as well as in Stuart, Florida. Clients can choose to be seen in person or through telehealth.

Does Christian Counseling Work?

Yes, research shows that matching clients with counselors who have the same religious and spiritual beliefs is advantageous. It provides a higher level of support and even strengthens the therapeutic alliance. Christian counseling outcomes are just as good, if not better, than secular ones, and have the added bonus of increasing spiritual wellbeing.

Because religious faith can play a significant role in an individual’s life, many prospective therapy clients who identify as Christian feel more comfortable seeing a counselor who shares their beliefs or who is at least prepared to discuss their faith openly and without judgment.”

How Does Christian Counseling Work?

Christian counselors can use evidence-based modalities to improve their client’s mental wellbeing while incorporating the principles of faith.

For example, cognitive behavioral therapy is proven to work and is one of the most effective modalities available. It helps people recognize, challenge and change negative thoughts which result in changed behavior that supports a more positive mindset.

Religious cognitive behavioral therapy does much the same thing, while incorporating elements of faith. It:

  • Follows the same process as CBT
  • Uses religious beliefs to challenge negative thoughts
  • Helps establish a hopeful and meaningful worldview, aiding clients in becoming more optimistic about their lives
  • Inspires positive behaviors, including gratitude, forgiveness and generosity through strengthened Christian beliefs
  • Encourages involvement in the religious community, to provide a more supportive network for clients
  • Turn the focus to God and others, lending a sense of purpose and meaning to life, and shifting focus from oneself and negative circumstances

Christian Therapists Make a Real Difference in the Lives of their Clients:

“In my therapy sessions, my therapist allows me to talk about my faith and how it affects me as an individual. After all, our faith should play an integral role in how we navigate our relationships, experiences, and healing. Through my therapy sessions, I have come to the realization that God is always there for me and that I will never lose Him. Within my therapy sessions, I could have left God out of the equation, but instead, therapy has enabled me to talk about God even more. It has made God the integral part of my mental, emotional, and spiritual healing.”

Does Insurance Cover Therapy with a Christian Counselor?

Many insurances now have provisions for mental health therapy, and do not distinguish between therapy given by a qualified mental health counselor who is Christian and one who is not.

To be sure you are covered, we will run a verification of your benefits prior to your first appointment. This way, you will be aware of any co-pays, deductibles or co-insurance that may be due when you arrive. We also accept credit cards or HSA payments for any co-pays or deductibles due.

For those without mental health benefits, we offer low cash pay rates and sliding scale fees.
