What is Spravato (esketamine)?
Spravato is a purified and more potent form of ketamine, without its sedative effects. Spravato has been shown to:
- Provide immediate relief of depression symptoms
- Boost learning and memory
- Reduce brain activity associated with automatic negative thoughts (ruminations)
- Encourage the development of new connections in the brain
- Decrease suicidal thoughts
- Over time, retrain the brain to stay in this state
Spravato is available only as a prescription nasal spray. Under the supervision of a certified healthcare provider, clients administer the medication themselves and are observed for a minimum of two hours to ensure there are no adverse effects.

Does Spravato Work?
Yes, Spravato has been shown to work in several studies. In one, 70 percent of patients with TRD had at least a 50 percent improvement in symptoms. Even better, over half of participants (52 to 53 percent) experienced total remission.
“In most clients, Spravato works in minutes to hours to significantly relieve symptoms. This is compelling, as antidepressants take six to 12 weeks to reach full effectiveness. Also, with antidepressants alone, up to half of people with depression fail to completely relieve their symptoms, while a third don’t receive any relief. Spravato can be a Godsend for these treatment resistant patients.”
– Justin Baksh, LMHC, BC-TMH, Chief Clinical Officer, iMind Mental Health Solutions
How Does Spravato Work?
SPRAVATO works differently and more quickly than antidepressants. It targets the neurotransmitter glutamine, which is the most plentiful in the brain. Spravato has been shown to:
- Provide fast-acting anti-depressant effects via a rapid surge of glutamate which activates postsynaptic AMPA receptors.
- Increase brain plasticity, the ability of the brain to change and adapt by stimulating brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) production and other means.
- Decrease connectivity in areas responsible for endless negative thoughts, or rumination. These include connections between dorsal and pregenual anterior consulate cortex as well as the default mode network and prefrontal cortex’s executive control network.
- Boost positive emotions and quell negative ones, by reducing overactivity in the lateral habenula, which affects the reward center. Overactivity here also leads to an inability to get the same enjoyment out or things previously enjoyed.

What is a Spravato REMS Treatment Center?
Spravato is only available at REMS (Risk Evaluation and Management) certified treatment centers, as required by the Food and Drug Administration. Spravato treatment centers must:
- Be REMS certified to receive, dispense, and treat patients with Spravato
- Ensure REMS patient enrollment with Spravato prescriber
- Directly observe and monitor patients being treated with Spravato for at least two hours
- Report to the Spravato manufacturer REMS program on a timely basis
iMind Mental Health Solutions is the first certified Spravato REMS treatment center in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Spravato is making a real difference in the lives of people living with depression:

“When I was fully in my throes of depression, I would start every day off at a negative six or seven. After I started taking Spravato, I’m starting the day waking up neutral, which is best. My mom is my best friend… I’m actually finishing off my first semester… [and] I am learning so much stuff and growing as a person. I’m almost 24, and I never thought I’d live to see [it]. I just have so many opportunities. It’s awesome.”

TMS for Depression: How It Helps
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) works directly on the areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. Dysfunction in these areas can cause depression, and TMS aims to correct it.
